Chico Peace Alliance News

May 22, 2025

Peaceful Protest Training Session

The Chico Peace Alliance co-sponsored a very successful Peaceful Protest Training with Stonewall Alliance on May 10. This training marks the first Peace Alliance joint venture with Stonewall. We are looking forward to more work together!

The purpose of the training was to give resistance protestors tips on how to de-escalate interactions with counter-protestors at events. So far, the counter-protestor presence has been negligible at our previous events, thankfully. But our presence and resistance is here for the long haul, so we may yet have an issue arise.

Shelby Hebert, the Stonewall Training Director, presented many tips for bystander intervention and de-escalation tips if one of our fellow protestors is being harassed. She used interactive question-and-answer techniques and a slide presentation to show us examples of using techniques that de-escalate conflict.

We had a diverse group of people in terms of age at the training. Space at the Chico Friends Meetinghouse is comfortable and welcoming. In fact, another similar training is scheduled for Saturday, June 21 if there seems to be  sufficient interest. If you would like to attend the June 21 two-hour training from 2-4 pm (with plenty of after-training discussion time over light snacks for those who wish to stay and talk) please let us know by emailing [email protected]  by June 1st so we can plan another session!

Hope to see you there! And hope to see you at any of the resistance events happening in May and June.

Unified Call to Confront Famine in Gaza:
Launch the Diplomatic Humanitarian Convoy Now

In March 2020, Law for Palestine (L4P) was officially established as a non-profit human rights organization, registered in both the United Kingdom and Sweden . Led by a diverse team of Palestinians and non-Palestinians, L4P operates locally and internationally. From its inception, the organization has brought together young professionals from around the globe, united by a shared mission to address gaps in the application of international law to the Question of Palestine and to support the Palestinian people in realizing their inalienable right to self-determination.

The  Chico Peace Alliance has joined the call as a signatory.

The unified call states:

1. We call on all states to publicly commit to joining the humanitarian convoy by dispatching official diplomatic missions to accompany the aid trucks into Gaza via the Rafah Crossing. A specific departure date will be announced soon. States must also reject the weaponization of aid and Israel’s planned distribution mechanisms, which militarize relief efforts and bypass UN agencies and humanitarian actors.

2. We urge all states to coordinate with the United Nations and the Government of Egypt to facilitate the convoy’s entry and ensure the immediate, unhindered, and safe passage of humanitarian aid, medical teams, and relief workers.

3. While some governments complicit in the ongoing atrocities may choose not to participate, we call on individual diplomats, parliamentarians, and ministers from those countries to join the convoy in their personal capacities.

4. We urge international media outlets to accompany the convoy - to bear witness, to document the famine, and to expose the blockade starving Gaza.

5. We call on global civil society, including NGOs, trade unions, student groups, political parties, and solidarity networks, to mobilize immediately - to pressure governments to support the convoy and provide material, political, and public support.

6. We call on the United Nations to immediately declare Gaza a famine zone based on the verified data, and to support this unified call by actively facilitating, endorsing, and joining the Diplomatic Humanitarian Convoy.

This is a human imperative. A Diplomatic Humanitarian Convoy would mark a historic step to break the siege, end the starvation, and affirm the world’s rejection of hunger as a weapon of war.
This call is grounded in international law, shared morality, Genocide Convention, the ICJ’s provisional measures, the UN Charter, and countless resolutions from the UN, OIC, Arab League, and the European and African Unions.

Letter to Congress
Negotiating Peace in Ukraine

The Chico Peace Alliance supports a letter to congress stipulating provisions for a peace settlement in Ukraine. The key principles are stated below.  Dear Members of Congress,

We write as organizations variously focused on U.S. national security and foreign policy, human rights, the protection of civilians, peacebuilding, and humanitarian response. As negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine continue, it is important that members of Congress engage robustly in supporting an inclusive peace process. We believe that the goal of a secure and prosperous Ukraine is achievable if the United States takes an inclusive, realistic, and sophisticated approach to these talks. The framework for the peace process should result in:

● A durable and verifiable end to the fighting, including an end to the targeting of critical infrastructure and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.
● Meeting immediate humanitarian needs, including access to basic services and humanitarian needs.
● The release and return of captives in line with international law and establishing a process for justice.
● Inclusion of civilian voices in negotiations.
● Upholding the rights of civilians, especially in occupied territories.
● Enabling family reunification.
● Obtaining concrete guarantees for Ukrainian reconstruction and establishing a process for reconciliation, accountability and repair.
Signed by over thirty Peace and Human Rights Organizations

Social Security Demonstration

What the Chico ER called a “massive” gathering of protestors took place on May Day (International Workers’ Day), May 1, at the Chico Social Security Offices in support of Social Security and protesting cuts proposed by Trump and gaining support in the Republican controlled Congress. With a variety of peaceful signs, protesters lined up on Lassen sidewalks and extended around the corner onto Cohasset. (A similar, well-attended protest also took place at the SS offices in Oroville.)

The event was organized by the Peace Alliance, Chico Indivisible, Chico Resist, and the Democratic Action Club.
Laurel Yorks did incredible organizing work to help this turnout. In the ER, she said, “We’re really trying to get organizations to come in and to be allies with us on this.” She added, “We have to keep the pressure on Congress. We have to keep pressure on the Supreme Court and especially on the presidential administration. We cannot stop. We are going to keep organizing these for the long haul.”

One participant and monitor, Mharia Ross-Walcott, wrote afterward:
Monitoring at the local Butte Actions make me feel alive in my body. People feel held by the ones wearing the neon vests. When I got home after the event I felt weary with the density of these times in my cells & took the chance to grieve. The sobs made me feel alive too.
The intimacy shared last night from people at the Bonfire Immigration Stories Event at CSUC sparked for me a recognition around the cost of migration & the imprint of displacement trauma, as well as the multi faceted trauma of colonization- for all Native American people in particular, and then again for all of us.
As Cory Himp Hunt shared,
Life itself is a migration
Of spirit through time…
And with all the wars, histories
And new executive orders by the hour

~~~
I mean when did Europeans
stop being immigrants anyway
Never
They just are quick to dial 911
Demanding we never forget
Never forget alright
Never forget this is occupied Mechoopda territory
Y En Tierra Robada
Nadie Es Ilegal
(On stolen land, no one is illegal)
Mharia continues:
My grandparents were immigrants to the US and my husband came here at 30 years of age. Cultural riches lost… & then again~ we have the opportunity to weave vital tapestries of colorful human connection. As we stand together in this time of unraveling & uncertainty, unity & strength are grounded in building community!
Leslie Johnson and Bob Trausch, writing to the monitors:
We just wanted to thank you all for showing up and contributing your time to help keep everything running smoothly and safely at the rally today. I think it was a really great event. These demonstrations draw a lot of attention to the issues, and I think they also give people comfort and courage to push on, knowing a lot of other people care about the same things, and recognize the crisis we currently face. It really builds community, and you all are a huge help in making that happen. Thanks, and let's keep going.
Obviously demonstrations will continue.
Empty Chair Town Hall
Wednesday May 28   5:30 PM
Masonic Family Center
Because Republicans in Congress have been reluctant in many cases to hold Townhall meetings during the very unpopular Trump administration where they face a lot of criticism and pushback from their constituents, there has arisen a large number of citizen organized events across the country called Empty Chair Townhall meetings. The empty chair reflects the fact that, although invited, the congressman fails to appear. Our congressman, Doug LaMalfa, is a typical example.
Chico will be hosting a Townhall meeting on May 28. It will be at the Masonic Family Center. Doors will open at 4:30 PM and the program will start at 5:30 PM. Keynote speaker will be Heidi Hall. Heidi is currently the chair of the County Supervisors in District 1 (Nevada Co. area).  She is also a candidate for the 3rd Congressional district hoping to unseat Kevin Kiley. There will be additional speakers from the Chico city Council, Butte county supervisors, and the Chico board of education. We Love a Parade
Chico Peace Alliance at
the Procession of the Species.
The Peace Alliance was well represented at the Butte Environmental Council Procession of the Species parade on Saturday, April 26. We had the Tree of Unity, the Hands of Peace, and much more, marching with numerous children and adults, drummers, and giant puppets, all recognizing the importance of preserving and protecting life. We deeply appreciate Kathy Faith's  creativity and hard work and also Dale Rudisill's help in actualizing the movement of the beautiful tree. Also thanks also to Laurel Yorks for setting up a table in the Plaza and for those who stayed late into the rainy afternoon to talk peace with passers by. More than a dozen folks signed up to receive our emails.
KZFR Pledge Drive
KZFR community radio is in the midst of its spring pledge drive. As you probably know, the Trump administration is attacking the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports public radio stations like KZFR and KCHO. The theme of the Zephyr pledge drive is "Protect Community Radio," and funds will be needed to fill in gaps created by the Trump crowd. You can pledge anytime, but might focus on public affairs programs like:
Ecotopia--Tuesday 5-6:30
The Real Issue - Wednesday 6-7
Peace and Social Justice - Friday, 11:30-1
Natalie Hanson will be the Peace and Social Justice Program host on Friday as the pledge drive draws to a close.
KZFR broadcasts live at 90.1 FM and streams at kzfr.org.
More than 70 million people currently rely on social security checks, earned through their own hard work, or the hard work of a parent or spouse. All this is under threat by the Trump administration.
Plan to join this peaceful action! Bring signs calling for The Trump and Musk administration to keep their Hands OFF Social Security!
Workshop and Rally
Saturday, April 5
9-noon Nonviolent Workshop
1:30-3:30 Hands Off Rally
Saturday, April 5th, is a National  Day of Action, with what may be the largest rallies and marches held all over this nation since Trump started his second term with seemingly daily Executive Orders that erode democracy, wipe out jobs, destroy our social safety net, and shred our constitutional protections. We want a stop to loss of due process, human rights, access to health care, and massive job losses. We are in this together!
We can put pressure on Congressional Republicans who are fueling this coup. Tell them ‘ “Hands Off of Immigrants’ Rights. Hands Off of Social Security. Hands Off of Medicaid. Hands Off of Veterans Jobs. Hands Off of LGBTQIA and Trans Neighbors. Hands Off of First Amendment !
Join us on April 5th here in Chico at 1:30 pm at Children’s Park (across from Colliers Hardware in downtown Chico on First Street where it meets the Esplanade). Bring your signs. Hear from people who are affected by program cuts and job losses.
Then march with us, peacefully but determined, starting approximately at 2:15 pm through downtown and back to Children’s Park.
We’ll have tables where you can find kinship with local organizations who can fight the battle with you.
We need your help to do this! Can you come to our Peaceful Protest Workshop (see info below) from 9am to 12 pm and get trained to help as a traffic monitor to help keep marchers safe? Or learn how to de-escalate situations where provocateurs may try to instigate violence through insults or other  aggression?
And:
On April 5 at 9 am to noon, the Chico Peace Alliance will be hosting a training workshop on how to engage in effective nonviolent actions for change. Advanced training makes mass actions more organized, better coordinated, more effective, and safer for everybody.
In this workshop, we will review the history of nonviolent campaigns, consider various different kinds of non-violent actions, and share guidelines for engaging in successful nonviolent demonstrations. We will talk about power: What it is, who has it, and how they get it. We will reflect on violence and the roots of violence.
There will be some brief role playing exercises and opportunities for discussion. Once you have had this training, you will be better prepared to be involved in nonviolent direct actions. We think you will find this training thought provoking and inspiring, as well as useful.
No cost. Donations accepted. Refreshments and breaks provided. Space is limited. Please let us know if you plan to attend:
Commentary:
Let's Not Allow the Return of a "Siege"
Jim Anderson
Chico Enterprise Record
      We all know of medieval warfare from books and films. We know the siege was a tactic by which a town or castle was surrounded to prevent anyone from entering or leaving and to prevent food, water, and necessities from being suppled. Starving the townspeople was a strategy.
      Today the world has outlawed the use of such tactics that cause terrible harm to civilians and has called upon all nations to reject this cruel practice. As noted in a recent Enterprise-Record article, just such a siege blockade had been imposed by Israel on the people of Gaza. Food, water, electricity and fuel cannot enter, and even the few bakeries still making bread risk closing.
      If you were seeking an enemy in hiding and your friend said: "Why don't we just lock up his family and neighbors and starve them until he gives up?" what would you say? Our country has the power to prevent this cruelty through its control of arms sales, its public statements and influences with Israel, and by supporting Security Council actions calling Israel to account (rather than using its veto).
      There is certainly a desire now for our country to enter an era in which we show strength, courage, and moral leadership. To stand against this cruel practice of harm to Gazan men, women, and children would show such leadership. To hold back our power to protect shows either moral disregard or weakness.
       Call Representative LaMalfa and our Senators Schiff and Padilla and press for action.
Please call Senator Alex Padilla's office by the end of the day Thursday, March 13, as the Chico Advocacy Team meets with his key staff on the issue of humanitarian aid to Palestine. The Advocates who are meeting are from all over California, including five of us from Chico. The team is led by Jesus Martin Gallegos from San Diego, a younger activist who deserves our support. Tell the phone answerers that we demand electricity and water restoration, humanitarian aid, and the re-installation of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).  Be sure to make your call by Thursday afternoon.
Demand the Release of Mahmoud Khalil
Call ICE at 319-992-1600
Mahmoud is a Columbia University student detained by ICE for his political activism. This is an unconstitutional attack on free speech, initiated by Trump and his cronies. The First Amendment protects all individuals, including non-citizens, from being punished for expressing their views. The Supreme Court has ruled that peaceful activism is not a crime. This detention echoes McCarthyism, where people were persecuted for their beliefs. America must not repeat its past mistakes. Targeting activists for dissent is illegal and un-American. Call ICE. Demand answers: On what grounds is he being held?  If there are no formal charges, he must be released immediately. Call today!
Gather at Representative LaMalfa's Office
120 Independence Circle, Chico*
This Friday, March 14, 11 am - noon
Given our elected representative's unwillingness to hold town hall gatherings to hear the voices of his constituents, there will be a gathering, with signs, this Friday, March 14. This will be a peaceful protest. Since he won't hold a town hall in Chico, we are left with showing up at his district office to let him know we are concerned about the course our country is on. We will obey all laws of peaceful protest to get our message heard. Bring signs! These gatherings will continue on Fridays.
*Philadelphia Square. Take 99N to Eaton Road exit; take the roundabout to westbound Eaton; take an immediate left into Philadelphia Square. Or follow the Esplanade north to Eaton and follow signs to Philadelphia Square.
Send a Postcard to the President
On March 15, many people will mail Donald Trump a postcard that publicly expresses opposition to him. And people, in vast numbers, from all corner of the world, will overwhelm the man with his unpopularity and failure.
If each of us writes even a single postcard and we put them all in the mail on the same day, March 15th, well: you do the math.
So sharpen your wit, unsheathe your writing implements, and see if your sincerest ill-wishes can pierce Donald’s famously thin skin.
Write one postcard. Write a dozen! Take a picture and post it on social media tagged with #TheIdesOfTrump! Spread the word! Everyone on Earth should let Donnie know how he’s doing.
Then, on March 15th, mail your messages to:
